Camstreams uses Windows Media technology to provide the video and audio stream. This means you will need a copy of Windows Media Player version 6.4 or greater installed on your computer, or a plugin which can interpret Windows Media format.
The solutions work on both PC and Macintosh platforms. If you have one of the following operating systems, you should be able to watch Camstreams streams:
Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT4, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7, Windows Server 2003/2008, MacOS 8, 9.1 and X (all flavours).
Streams should work fine on a PC in Internet Explorer without issue. If you have a problem, try repairing/reinstalling/Updating your windows media player version if possible. Users of other browsers may have to install a plugin to make them work.
Safari/Firefox/Chrome Mac users: Download and install Flip4Mac Quicktime Components. Chrome users may also have to enable the plugin after installation by typing 'chrome://plugins' into the address bar and enabling it. Note that streams take a while to start on Macs.
iPhone: As of May 2012 we are about half way through development on this. The App will be free and allow you to watch all Camstreams streams. We've had to change developers at this late stage to push on the progress a little. We hope to be completed within the next month or so.
Android: Same as above! The free app will be available for ARM based Android devices. All Apps are being worked on simultaneously, but obviously we want to get it right before releasing them. Be patient, it'll be worth it :)
Windows Phone: We've been lucky enough to find a superb Windows Phone developer who has knocked us up a quick prototype which we're turning into a production app. Also free and hopefully out in the next month!
Stream flicks to 'Ended' or 'Ready' immediately:
If you're using Windows and find that the Media Player says 'Ended' or 'Ready' immediately without playing the stream, try the following:
- Close any stream web pages
- Open Windows Explorer, and type %appdata% in the address bar at the top. (You will end up in 'Roaming')
- Browse back one level to the 'Local' folder, then 'Microsoft'
- Rename the 'Media Player' folder to anything else (so you can rename it back if this doesn't work)
- Run Windows Media Player from the Start Menu so it rebuilds its settings
- Come back to Camstreams and hopefully it'll work!

Firstly, not all broadcasters have Camstreams Chat enabled. This might be because their cam is not an interactive one (e.g. just scenery), or they may choose to only enable it during the times they are able to respond. If this is the case, you will see a description of the stream next to the streaming video and no chat room.
If, however, you just see a big blank space next to the stream, this sounds like a problem. Our live chat system has been developed to be as accessible as Windows Media. It utilises Flash technology from Adobe. We require you to have version 7 of the player (or above) for the chat application to work. You can get this for Windows 98, ME, 2000, 2003 and XP, Mac os 9 and X and some flavours of Unix/Linux.
Click the button below to go to Adobe's website and download the Flash player.
